Spaulding Turnpike Shield

The Spaulding Turnpike is a tolled expressway that connects the cities of Portsmouth and Rochester, New Hampshire along the eastern border of the state. The route is only 35 miles long from start to end, and therefore only two open-barrier maineline toll plazas are used, and none of the interchanges are tolled. The route is signed as US-1 BYP, US-4, and NH-16 in different locations.

Route description[edit]

The Spaulding Turnpike begins in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the junction of Lafayette Road and US-1 BYP (by-pass). Immediately south of the junction, Lafayette Road is signed as US-1. The US-1 designation follows Lafayette Road after it splits to the northeast, while the road continuing due north becomes US-1 BYP and the Spaulding Turnpike, although the latter is not signed on the road itself. After 1.5 miles, US-1 BYP splits the northeast as well at the Portsmouth Traffic Circle, and the Spaulding Turnpike continues due north, now officially signed with the Spaulding Turnpike Shield and also signed as US-4. The Turnpike also becomes a limited access expressway at this location. At mile 5.4, the Turnpike crosses the Little Bay Bridge over the Piscataqua River and enters the city of Dover. US-4 then splits to the west, and the Turnpike is signed as NH-16. It then continues north for 25 miles, until it ends at the junction of NH-125 in Milton, a suburb of Rochester. At this point, NH-16 continues north as the toll-free White Mountains Parkway.

Tolls[edit]

Because of its short length, only two mainline toll barriers are in use along the Spaulding Turnpike, and none of the interchanges are tolled. At both of the toll plazas, 2-axle vehicles are charged a $1.50 cash toll. EZ-PASS users receive a discount of $0.75. There are three lanes each direction at the Rochester Toll Plaza and four lanes each direction at the Dover Toll Plaza. At Rochester, the left lane is for exact change cash only, the middle lane is EZ-PASS only, and the right lane is cash or EZ-PASS with change available. The Dover Toll Plaza works the same way, except that there are two EZ-PASS only lanes in the middle.
