Dover Toll Plaza
The Dover Toll Plaza is the southern and one of two mainline toll barriers along the Spaulding Turnpike, located just north of the Little Bay Bridge. The Dover Toll Plaza, like the Rochester Toll Plaza further north, charges a cash toll of $0.75 and an EZ-PASS toll of $0.50 for 2-axle vehicles. Despite being less than 1/2 north of the northern terminus of the US-4 concurrency with the Spaulding Turnpike, traffic entering and exiting from US-4 West at exit 6 do not pay a ramp toll.
The two mainline toll barriers along the Spaulding Turnpike are noted for their “exact change only” lanes in the far left lane of highway. At the Rochester Toll Plaza, the highway is only three lanes wide, and therefore the left lane is exact change, the middle lane is EZ-PASS, and the right lane is cash or EZ-PASS. At Dover, the highway is four lanes wide, and therefore two EZ-PASS only lanes are available in the middle. The exact change lanes appear at both toll plazas along the Spaulding Turnpike, as well as the ramp toll plazas along the Everett Turnpike. The theory behind them was to be able to have unattended cash lanes, where no attendant to give change or receipts would be necessary. However, the lanes have proven to be confusing especially for out-of-state drivers, and therefore plans exist to remove them in late 2018.
